These entry level rods from Carp tackle giant Fox are an absolute bargain and well worth the small amount of money you have to part with to get them. As well as having great features and handling, coming in a black/ graphite colour they look the business as well. They can cast large PVA bags out to around 50 yards and small ones even further. Work well with method feeders and have been responsible for me bringing in Carp upto 20lb in.

Overall a very good value rod for the beginner and if you are looking for a low cost three rod replacement.

The Knotless Knot has become the most common knot used by far when creating many of the rigs used when carp fishing roday. This is down to the fact that it is easy to tie, extremely strong and provides excellent bait presentation in even it’s simplest form.

You start by tying an over hand loop knot in your desired hooklength. This is just a basic loop added to the end of the hooklength which becomes the end of the hair rig. This is sometimes harder than it sounds depending on the material that you are using. Many people find it easier using a baiting needle to help you tie this loop.

The opposite end of the hooklink is then passed through the back of the hook eye as shown. This allows the hair to run down the back of the hook to help with presentation.

The hooklink is then wrapped or ‘whipped’ around the hook 5 or 6 times ensuring that the layers are kept tightly together to keep the knot as strong as possible.

The end of the hooklink is then passed back through the eye of the hook to complete the knotless knot. Depending on what kind of presentation you require you can pass the hooklink through in either direction. The most common way to do this is back through the same way as before, from the opposite side of the hook point, which generally provides more efficient hooking when the carp tries to eject the bait.

All that is required to finish the hooklink is to add whatever you need to the remaining end whether it be a swivel, rig ring or loop depending on the rig that you are creating.

Farriers

Farriers is a fantastic fishery consisting of two lakes nestled in the heart of the Cotswold Water Park surrounded by Gloucestershire countryside. The largest of the lakes at 32 acres was originally stocked by the Carp Society with an aim to becoming one of the best ‘Big Fish’ waters in the country. Over 650 fish were introduced prior to the lakes opening in 1997. The lake now regularly produces both mirror carp and common carp over 30lbs. There are also a number of double figure pike providing the winder predator hunter with plenty of sport.
Farriers is run on a syndicate basis by the Carp Society.

If you are struggling to attract bites on the bottom of the lake then you need to try to entice some of the fish swimming higher in the water.

A Zig Rig accomplishes this perfectly. The Zig Rig is basically a standard rig with an extra long hooklink used to present a popped up bait at the height of the cruising carp.

It is important to plumb the depth using a marker float so that you know exactly what depth you should be fishing at. You can then make your rig accordingly.

A normal running lead or semi-fixed setup will do fine. One important trick is to attach your baits as close to the hook as possible, using a very short hair. This will be the most effective presentation for fishing a pop-up in mid-water.

The Zig Rig, a great way to get some bites if other tactics are failing!
